Hiring Activity up by 8.1 % in June 09 as compared to May 09: Naukri JobSpeak

Monthly Update of Naukri JobSpeak – June '09

  • The Naukri JobSpeak index at 718, indicates an uptrend in hiring activity by 8.1%
  • Hiring activity in Mumbai picked up by 13% in June '09 as compared to May '09
  • Banking and Financial services saw an increase by 22% in June '09 as compared to May '09.
  • Hiring for IT-Professionals is back in action with an increase of 12% in June '09 as compared to May '09.

The Naukri JobSpeak index at 718, indicates an uptrend in hiring activity by 8.1%, as compared to 664 in May '09. It is the highest upward movement since Jul'08, indicating a strong hiring sentiment coming back to the market. The three-monthly moving average went up marginally to 686, from 684 in May '09.

"The economy has pulled out of the stagnancy in hiring. Although, there is an uptrend in hiring, this may be only indicative of replacement hiring," said Sumeet Singh, National Head – Marketing and Communications, Info Edge.

Hiring activity saw a significant push in Banking & Finance and IT. Mumbai picked up hiring activity after several months of stagnancy. Bangalore, Chennai and Pune saw an increase in hiring by over 10%. There was a greater emphasis on hiring for over 8 years of Experience.

City wise Analysis: Mumbai picked up by 13% in June '09 as compared to May '09 after falling for several months in succession.
Out of the top 13 cities, 12 cities recorded an increase in hiring activity in June '09 as compared to May '09, indicating a positive sentiment pan-India. Hiring activity in Mumbai picked up by 13% in June '09 as compared to May '09 after falling for several months in succession. Bangalore, Chennai and Pune saw a pick up in hiring activity by 10%,19% and 15% respectively, in June '09 as compared to May '09. Chandigarh and Cochin saw a pickup in hiring activity by 18% and 16% respectively, with Cochin surpassing the July'08 level of hiring.

Industry Analysis: Banking and Financial services saw an increase by 22%
A surge in hiring activity pushed up the indices for most of the industries. Hiring activity in Banking and Financial services saw an increase by 22% in June '09 as compared to May' 09. Real estate and Retail saw an increase in hiring by almost 25%, with both the industries pulling out of the low hiring mode. Telecom saw a comeback with hiring activity picking up by 17%, in June '09 as compared to May '09. After several months of a downtrend, hiring activity in IT-Software improved by 10%, while IT- Hardware and BPO& ITeS remained stable in June '09 as compared to May '09. With the index at 967, hiring activity for Education inched close to July'08 levels. (July'08 represents the start of the index)

FMCG and Consumer Durables saw a drop in hiring activity by 8% and 14% respectively.

Functional Area / Department : Hiring for IT-Professionals is back in action
Analysis of the functional areas most populated with jobs, June '09 brought in cheer, with indices going up across most of them. Hiring for IT-Professionals is back in action with an increase of 12% in the index of IT-Software and IT- Hardware professionals in June '09 as compared to May '09. Teaching and Education professionals saw a jump in demand by 22% in June '09 as compared to May '09. Banking & Insurance professionals saw a jump in demand by 12%, while demand for Accounting & Finance professionals inched up by 5%. June '09 saw an increased demand for Production and Maintenance professionals by 10% and Sales and Business Development professionals by 5%. Hiring for ITes and BPO professionals inched up by 3% in June '09 as compared to May '09.

Index of Total Jobs
On Total Jobs(this includes refreshed jobs), the index has moved up by 9.7% from 745 in May '09 to 818 in June '09. The movement was sharper as compared to New Jobs. According to the Total Jobs Index, the index peaked in Sep'08 at 1004 and bottomed in Dec'08 at 739, so far.

Methodology
The index has been calculated based on job listings added to the site month on month. July 2008 has been taken as the base month with a score of 1000 and the subsequent monthly index is compared with data for July 2008. Data has been sourced from Naukri.com and it reflects job listings and therefore hiring trends on the site. Jobs have been categorized by location, functional area, industry, experience bucket. The index has been analyzed across Cities/ Functional Area - Deptt / Industry verticals. The report (produced monthly) shows hiring trends across industry sectors, geography and functional areas. More than 34000 national and international clients used Naukri.com in 2008-2009, leading to high reliability of data.
